Help with images and galleries

How do I prepare my images for my website?

To best prepare your images for your website you will need to resize your images to the correct dimensions as defined in your site specifications (note: all designs can have any size images, no cropping is ever necessary) and use save for web so the sites will load as quickly as possible without sacrificing image quality. If you go to File -> Save For Web you will be presented with a screen that will allow you to do just this. We have found that using a compression rate around 40 will achieve the best results with a maximum amount of compression without sacrificing your image quality.

Here are some guidelines for preparing images using Adobe Photoshop (CS2 and CS3)

Make sure your image is in sRGB color space. If not, assign it by choosing Edit > Assign Profile … and choosing sRGB
We recommend performing some sharpening after you have resized your image. Our preferred method is
Choose Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen
Choose Edit > Fade Sharpen …
Set the Fade opacity to a value that reduces the sharpening effect to an acceptable level (generally between 50 and 70)
Save your image by choosing File > Save for Web (do not use File > Save or File > Save As …)
NOTE: The LR equivalent for save for web is File –> Export
Select jpg format
Make sure progressive is not checked
Choose a quality level (more pixels means you can have less quality)
Resulting file size will be displayed in the lower-left of the Save for Web window
Click Save to save your file
When saving, avoid special characters in your file name (# or &)

Now you you can click the + icon and begin selecting multiple images to upload. To select more than one image at a time to upload just hold down the shift key while selecting the images. Click the upload button once you are ready and you are on your way.

How do I add Captions to images?

All APhotoFolio websites support image captions and there are two methods for getting the captions to show up with the images.

A. Caption your images in Photoshop or a similar program that allows adding image metadata.

  1. Add your image caption to the description field (EXIF or XMP).
  2. When saving for web (photoshop) you must choose to include xmp: In Photoshop CS3, metadata can be preserved by changing the default settings: File > Save for Web & Devices > Optimize Menu Flyout >Edit Output Settings>Saving Files> select Include XMP to prevent metadata from being stripped. Once selected the option remains checked until changed by the user.
  3. Add the image to a gallery (images must be in galleries for captions to work).
  4. Go into the image bank, click on the image and approve your caption by clicking the submit button.

B. Caption your images inside your site admin.

  1. Add the image to a gallery (images must be in galleries for captions to work).
  2. Go into the image bank, click on the image you want to caption and write your caption in the box then click the submit button.

Once the caption is added you must add the caption option to your navbar:

You will be able to click the caption button if the image has a caption:

How do I create a home page slideshow?

Your website comes with a slideshow on the landing page (after the intro but before someone clicks on a menu item). To activate simply load images in the extra files folder under the advanced tab (you can also use FTP to do this. Put them in httpdocs–>extra and make sure you save for web in photoshop so they’re not huge (100-350 kb max)). Make sure to name them 01, 02, 03… to force a display order. Speed of the show and image positioning (center, right, left) can be adjusted in the template settings.

You can also have a single image or logo display instead by loading a background image.

What’s the best method to handle the color of my images?

Most web browsers do not read or support Color Profiles (except Safari and Firefox 3 with an add-on). But, most displays are very close to the sRGB color space.

So the approach that is the most accepted is to assign the image into that space first (sRGB) to get it as close as it can be to approximate the viewing device color space (the users monitor).

Since the color profile is not read by the browser, the idea is to strip it using “save for web” to greatly reduce the file size.

An advanced guide to color correcting your images can be found (here).

How do I make it so clicking a category opens a gallery (nothing drops down)?

When adding a single gallery to a category you will notice an anchor button. Click that to “anchor” the gallery to the category. If you have more than one gallery in a category you will not see the anchor button.
